The MUJC is pleased to offer its Professional Development Series which provides participants with creative and practical resources for enhancing professional expertise. These programs are available to staff members from both member and non-member districts. The Professional Development inservices are held online and in the MUJC’s Professional Development Center in New Providence, which consists of two spacious presentation rooms with state-of-the-art multimedia equipment. The inservice programs address all major areas of education and are designed to be practical with hands-on activities and skills directly applicable to the classroom.

With renewed interest and legislation bringing cursive writing back into elementary classrooms, educators are asking an important question: What does this mean for instruction? This engaging and practical online workshop is designed for participants who want to thoughtfully integrate cursive into their day without overwhelming existing priorities. Participants will explore the why behind cursive's return, including its connections to reading development, fine motor skills, and cognitive processing. From there, the workshop shifts to the how: developmentally appropriate skills by grade level including the grades leading up to cursive instruction, realistic ways to embed cursive into daily instruction and content-area learning, and support for diverse learners and students with fine motor challenges.

Best strategies to help a student reenter the school will be discussed during this online workshop. There has been a significant increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression among students. School staff struggle to find ways to help students manage their symptoms. Additionally, school personnel have noticed an increase in school avoidance/refusal. This can lead to academic and social challenges. As absences increase, it becomes particularly challenging to motivate the student to attend school. Participants will learn to identify warning signs of school avoidance/refusal to intervene early to minimize increased avoidance.

The Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) screening tool identifies high risk youth and guidance for next steps and helps schools avoid unnecessary emergency department referrals expediting care delivery to those at highest risk. Because this screen can be delivered by all (teachers, coaches, nurses, counselors), numerous school districts have moved toward system wide implementation enabling blanket coverage and linking of systems (e.g., schools, first responders, corrections, hospitals/behavioral health, crisis assessment) which foster prevention. This screening tool has the potential to identify at-risk youth before a tragedy occurs. Participants of this workshop will learn how to administer the screening and full versions of the tool, customize the tool and interpret results, indentify which students should have emergency assessment, and ways to streamline triage and care delivery.

This online workshop will unlock the complexities of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), which has recently been considered as a distinct pattern of behavior most often seen among individuals with autism. PDA is characterized by an overwhelming resistance to everyday demands and requests. Individuals with this profile commonly need to establish and maintain control, which is often related to their significant discomfort (i.e., anxiety). Their behaviors commonly interfere with their functioning across situations and environments, and these behaviors tend not to respond as well to conventional treatment approaches. Successful intervention includes fostering greater flexibility, social awareness, empathy, and adaptive skills to increase their independence. Participants will learn evidence-based practices to more effectively support and educate individuals with PDA.

Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT) is based on a philosophy that embodies neuromotor principles. This workshop focuses on the motor speech system and includes an evidenced-based framework for identifying motor breakdowns, determining treatment targets, designing treatment sessions, and applying the four levels of technique (Parameter, Surface, Complex, and Syllable PROMPTs). Following the completion of this course, participants will be able to immediately use the four levels of PROMPT technique. Easy-to-use resources are provided.

This engaging and practical online workshop is designed for participants who want to thoughtfully integrate cursive into their day without overwhelming existing priorities. Participants will explore the why behind cursive's return, including its connections to reading development, fine motor skills, and cognitive processing. From there, the workshop shifts to the how: developmentally appropriate skills by grade level including the grades leading up to cursive instruction, realistic ways to embed cursive into daily instruction and content-area learning, and support for diverse learners and students with fine motor challenges.

The Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) screening tool identifies high risk youth and guidance for next steps and helps schools avoid unnecessary emergency department referrals expediting care delivery to those at highest risk. Because this screen can be delivered by all (teachers, coaches, nurses, counselors), numerous school districts have moved toward system wide implementation enabling blanket coverage and linking of systems (e.g., schools, first responders, corrections, hospitals/behavioral health, crisis assessment) which foster prevention. This screening tool has the potential to identify at-risk youth before a tragedy occurs. Participants of this workshop will learn how to administer the screening and full versions of the tool, customize the tool and interpret results, indentify which students should have emergency assessment, and ways to streamline triage and care delivery.

PDA is characterized by an overwhelming resistance to everyday demands and requests. During this workshop, information about the legal requirements pertaining to student attendance, residency and homelessness issues, including what constitutes excused absences, legally required steps for developing attendance improvement plans and when to involve the court system, will be provided. Participants will gain an understanding of how to properly determine residency, including forms of documentation to be considered, the rights of students not residing with their parents or legal guardians, and the due process involved when there is a dispute over student residency. Legal issues, including eligibility, resources and services available to homeless students, will also be addressed.
