Parent Training Opportunities

Parent Training Series:
A Training Series for Parents in Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, And Applied Behavior Analysis

Introduction:
We are pleased to offer our Parent Training Series Workshops.  These workshops are open to anyone involved with a child who has been diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder.  When you initially receive the diagnosis of Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD/NOS, or any of the disorders along the spectrum, there are many unanswered questions and concerns that arise.  If your child is older, there may be new situations which occur that you may need assistance with or may have questions about.  This series is an attempt to answer some of those questions, to give you some direction as to where to go for assistance, to provide you with the support of other parents who are in similar situations, and to give you an opportunity to interact with professionals who work with children with autism.

Topics:
The series will cover basic background information on autism, applied behavior analysis, various instructional methodologies and behavior management approaches. We are continuing the hands-on training for the teaching skills and behavior management sections of the training. During these sessions, we will assist parents and participants in targeting a skill they would like to teach their child and then help them develop and implement a program to teach that skill. We will also help parents and participants target and address a challenging behavior they may be experiencing in the home, assisting in designing and implementing a behavior management plan.

Participants:
In the past we have had parents, grandparents, siblings, baby sitters, child study team members, and therapists attend these sessions.  We have found that when more people involved with your child attend these workshops, it helps to ensure consistency in your child’s programming and enhance his daily progress.  You may attend any one or all of the workshops offered, but we strongly urge you to attend all of them because each session builds upon the week before.
